Back home, Rani spends her time with her maternal cousins. She goes to Bhima park, plays cricket and watches beauty of the wild forest. Monaco circus have pitched their tent in Pehrauli. Rani, her brothers and sisters and Karnesh buy tickets and enter the circus tent. Western music is appealing. They enjoy the tricks of elephants, lions, jokers and live acrobatics of circus girls. Karnesh says, ” We get milk chocolates free.” Rani, her brothers and sisters and Karnesh take a bar each. They are surprised when the vendor asks for money from another person who has taken milk chocolates. Rani and her group do not have money to pay for milk chocolates. They remain silent and sneak out of the tent as quickly as possible. They run towards L.N. road.
Mother has some husk of grains left in the house. She wants it to be disposed off. Cousin Karnesh sees a goat on the other side of the road. He wants to cross over and go to the other side of the road. The goat sees that he has some husk in the container. It bleats and crosses the road to get the husk. Before it reaches for the husk, a speeding truck kills it. It is a sad incident which is registered in children’s minds.
Rani’s mother’s uncle comes during the vacation. He is known as Murli mama. He has worn a white lungi. Murli mama speaks to Rani’s mother and then turns his attention to Rani’s younger brother, Mohan. He asks Mohan about his school. He does not reply but darts towards Murli mama to pull his lungi. Mama is embarrassed and decides to leave the house early.
Vacation comes to an end. Results are declared. Dad goes to fetch the marksheet. School leaving certificate is given. Dad reaches home. He jumps up, shouts, and laughs like a kid because Rani has scored first class with distinction. Rani is felicitated by the then corporator who happens to be the chief guest. Rani’s parents are not able to attend the felicitation function because they are busy.
Rani has still to face many hitches and glitches,
Before she reaches the region of actual success.
