Hullo! Bright day to you all. I am here with a video on the beginning of chapter six of ‘Ripples Roping Memories’

Rani’s father works overtime on national holidays because he gets double the amount of pay. Mother wants to maintain tradition. She celebrates Varalakshmi nomb, a function which is held during the Adi month of Tamil calendar which falls usually during July or August. Shri Lakshmi puja is performed during any of the Adi Fridays. Rani collects mango leaves, plantain leaves and tender shoots of banana plants. Mother makes kolams or rangolis and cooks a variety of dishes. She wears a nine yard saree as per the custom. She chants shlokas for the Devi. Dad cannot wait for long. He has to attend his duties. Rani’s mother completes one work and then moves on to another. She is not aware of multi tasking. For example, one need not stand near the tap for filling a bucket of water. The waiting time can be used for other work. The in laws brand Rani’s mother as inefficient. A comparison ensues between mom’s efficiency in household work with that of other women. Somehow mother stops performing Varalakshmi nomb because she has to prioritize her work. Cooking, household work and her children are to be considered first. Dad is attracted towards mom in spite of all differences. He talks to her about his experiences at work. Rani does not like her father. She tells her mom, ‘I hope this man does not return home from work.’ Mom is shocked and asks Rani, ‘Why do you say such a thing? He is your father. He is good.’ Rani cannot understand this ambivalent relationship. She knows mom has feelings for dad. She understands that dad takes care of her and does not hurt her. Her brothers and sisters fight amongst themselves. Her sisters Uma and Revathi go outside to play. But Rani plays with he cousins when they visit her house. Cousins visit her house during vacations. They play cricket inside the house. Stumps are drawn on the wall. There are batsmen, bowlers and fielders. The front room is big. Running for runs is fun. Once, while fielding, Rani gets hit on the nose. Several cricket sessions of such type refreshes and relaxes Rani.

Karnesh’s grandfather appears to be pious but misbehaves with Rani. She is shocked to know that the old man is dirty. She tells her mom about the grandfather and she avoids the grandfather. Somehow the good influence of tradition starts waning. A constant feeling of disrespect towards elders dwells in Rani’s mind. She avoids doing namaskarams to elders. She refrains from trusting godly men. The old man’s son, Karnesh’s father, Natesh has a similar kind of disease. He has pictures of nude ladies in his house. He shows Rani the nude photos of foreign ladies. He tells Rani that she should know about this. Rani tells her mother everything about Karnesh’s father. Later, Rani’s mom sends her to Karnesh’s house only when aunt Janaki is present in the house.

Goodbye till the next video.
